The Royal Mail today appealed to pet owners to keep their animals under control after a postman was attacked – by a cat.
The cat, called Boo Boo, attacked the delivery man while he was on his rounds in the Pontprennau area of Cardiff, south Wales.
Now Boo Boo’s owner has been warned that postal deliveries to his house could be suspended unless he keeps the cat locked up.
The Royal Mail’s Area Manager for South and West Wales, Stuart Thompson, said that there have been 49 reports of postmen being injured by animals in the Cardiff and South Wales Valleys area.
While the majority of attacks are by dogs, there have been incidents involving cats, geese and even pheasants.
“The recent incident involving a cat attacking a postman is a case in point. The postman was concerned because the scratches to his hand resulted in blood stains on the post he was delivering to the address,” he said.
“He pushed a handwritten note through the customer’s letterbox apologising for damage to the mail.
“We were equally concerned about the injuries to his hand.”
A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail added: “It is particularly at this time of year, when families are at home more during the day during the school holidays, that pets, especially dogs, are allowed out on the streets without restraints.”
