Gardai in Co Westmeath are searching for thieves who hijacked a van and made off with over £70,000 worth of high quality sports gear.

Gardai in Co Westmeath are searching for thieves who hijacked a van and made off with over £70,000 worth of high quality sports gear.

The hijackers managed to stop the vehicle before overpowering the driver and stealing his vehicle.

The van had been on a weekly trip from Galway to Dublin with the footwear when the incident happened at around 8.30am.

The light green Isuzu van, with registration 99 D 70199 was passing a pedestrian on the road on the Athlone side of Moate, when it had its windscreen smashed.

The incident happened when a navy Toyota Carina pulled up alongside the van, before two men got out and made off in both vehicles.
