An explosion targeting a police patrol in central Baghdad killed at least two civilians and injured 10 today, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said.

The blast happened at about 10.40am local time in Tahrir Square, said Maj. Falah al-Mohammedawi, a spokesman for the ministry, which oversees police.

There were conflicting reports about whether the explosion was caused by a car bomb or roadside device.

The capital has suffered a surge of violence since the February 22 bombing of an important Shiite shrine in the mainly Sunni city of Samarra, which triggered reprisal attacks against Sunnis.

At least 68 people were killed yesterday in bombings and mortar fire against mainly religious targets in the city.
