A 17-year-old boy arrested in connection with a burglary and theft of two-high powered cars from a house in south Dublin was remanded on continuing bail today pending directions from the DPP.

The boy had been charged at the Children’s Court last month with burglary of a house at a Riverside Drive, in Rathfarnham, in Dublin, in the early hours of September 11 last. He was also charged with travelling in a stolen 2008 Mercedes-Benz car allegedly taken from the same house.

He had been granted conditional bail until today, when Judge Bryan Smyth was told that the prosecution was seeking for further time to obtain directions from the DPP in relation to the case.

Judge Smyth remanded the boy, who was accompanied to court by his father, to appear again next month.

Earlier, arresting garda Detective David Connolly had told Judge Smyth that it was alleged that “a number of men went to the house in the early hours of the morning. There was a young family asleep upstairs and they awoke to hear both family cars being driven away.”

In addition to the Mercedes, a high-powered Volvo 4X4 was also taken.

It was alleged that gardaí were led on a high-speed pursuit of the stolen Mercedes which was abandoned at Leinster Road, in south Dublin. The boy made no reply when charged.

Bail conditions have been set compelling the teenager to obey a 9pm to 8am curfew and to reside at his family home, in south Dublin.

He has also been told that gardai would be calling to the boy’s home to check that he was there during curfew hours.
