A major garda operation is underway in a probe into child pornography.

Over 80 premises have been searched since the operation started, at 6am this morning.

Up to 500 gardaí have been involved in the operation, which is taking place in all of the 26 counties.

The swoop has been codenamed 'Operation Amethyst' by the gardaí.

Gardaí have seized computer hardware and software in the investigation and this material will be examined by gardaí at Harcourt Square in Dublin.

A garda spokesman said the operation was the result of months of investigation work. It is part of a worldwide police attack on child porn.

Nobody has been arrested so far as part of the operation.
