Manchester City boss Kevin Keegan is a step closer to signing Marseille midfielder Djamel Belmadi after he completed a trial with the team.
Marseille coach Alain Perrin is set to let Belmadi move to Maine Road on a permanent basis when the transfer window opens on January 1.
Although City have yet to make a firm bid for the 26-year-old, Perrin has learned that Belmadi’s recent trial with City went well.
Marseille are surprise leaders of the French league, but they are short of money to strengthen their squad.
Belmadi, who has played in 15 of the club’s 19 league matches this season, could be sacrificed.
He has only started five of those matches, and Perrin said: “’OM’ are not against the departure of Djamel Belmadi.
“We said we would not be against the departure of players who are not part of the first team.”
