Garfield 'almost suffocated' in Spider-Man mask
Andrew Garfield almost suffocated in his Spider-Man mask.
'The Amazing Spider Man' star was filming a scene in a sewer when he managed to get water on his spandex face cover, which prevented him from breathing.
He told the New York Daily News newspaper: "I had to get wet, and I just kind of dove in and didn't realise that water on the mask made it impossible to breathe.
"So I was kind of, like, suffocating. I couldn't get any oxygen! I water-boarded myself."
Andrew stars as a young Peter Parker in the reboot of the film franchise alongside his girlfriend Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy) and Welsh actor Rhys Ifans (Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard).
Director Marc Webb says he knew the 28-year-old star was the right man to play Peter when he saw him eating a cheeseburger through a screen test he devised where the star would act out learning his life was in danger in the middle of lunch.
The filmmaker explained: "It was terrifying, because we have this idea of who this character is, and the actor needs to have the emotional capacity to express tragedy and gravitas. He needs to be funny and sort of sarcastic.
"And then he has to be somebody who could be convincing playing a teenager.
"[Andrew] was eating this cheeseburger and his elbows were flopping all over the place, and he was slumping down. He just felt like a teenager.
"That was a tremendous relief because there was a level of certainty in that moment that it was going to be okay."
'The Amazing Spider Man' is in cinemas from next week.
