Counting of Seanad votes to begin today

The counting of votes in the Seanad election is due to begin at 11am today in Leinster House.

The counting of votes in the Seanad election is due to begin at 11am today in Leinster House.

A total of 112 candidates are vying for the 60 Seanad seats.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, nominates 11 senators, the National University of Ireland and Trinity College nominate six and the remaining 43 are drawn from the ranks of county councils and well-known national institutions.

The elected senators will sit on five panels, including agriculture, labour, culture and education, industry and commerce and administration.

The result of the election is expected in the coming days.
