Head of Defence Forces warns ranks about harassment

The head of the Defence Forces has told his 11,500 troops that sexual harassment in the ranks is "entirely unacceptable and will not be tolerated".

The head of the Defence Forces has told his 11,500 troops that sexual harassment in the ranks is "entirely unacceptable and will not be tolerated".

Lieutenant General Colm Mangan has sent an open letter to every man and woman under his command, promising there will be no cover-up in investigations into alleged harassment or bullying.

The Lieutenant urged anyone within the forces who feels they are being harassed to bring their complaint forward.

The forces have also responded to claims that many women feel too threatened to complain to a superior.

Officers who fail to deal with complaints of harassment from will be charged with dereliction of duty.

Lieutenant Mangan’s actions were prompted by recent allegations of widespread abuse in the forces, in a report made public over a week ago.
