Murphy to miss Clare clash with finger injury

The Cork team for next Sunday’s league encounter with Clare will show at least one change from the starting 15 which beat Wexford last Sunday.

The Cork team for next Sunday’s league encounter with Clare will show at least one change from the starting 15 which beat Wexford last Sunday.

Erin’s Own player Kieran Murphy broke a finger during the game and will be out for the next few weeks.

There are other injury concerns including Joe Deane and Timmy McCarthy. A clearer picture won’t emerge until after training tonight.

Ben O’Connor is also unavailable due to a groin strain but brother Jerry is expected back in training tonight, his first involvement this year.

The team will not be announced until tomorrow night at the earliest.

With a place in the quarter-finals still not certain, John Allen and his selectors will not be experimenting too much.

One of those selectors, Fred Sheedy was delighted with the response last Sunday.

“It was a very good display. The backs laid the foundation and throughout the field the work rate was first class.

“Hopefully, now we can repeat it on Sunday against Clare because we are still not certain of making the knockout stages. It is our priority to do that as it will guarantee us at least one more competitive game.

Meanwhile, football boss Billy Morgan still has injury problems in advance of next Sunday’s relegation showdown with Monaghan.

John Hayes is a non starter with a broken bone in his hand.

Anthony Lynch is unlikely to be available with a hamstring strain while James Masters got a knock on the knee in the defeat by Tyrone.

That injury, along with Kieran O’Connor’s similar injury, will be assessed at training tomorrow night.

Despite losing to Tyrone, Morgan remains upbeat.

“I couldn’t fault the attitude of the team. I suppose what is worrying is our low scoring rate.

“But we have the best defensive record in the group which is encouraging. We need to improve, though, in the scoring stakes and, hopefully, we can start on Sunday.’"
