A farmer has been hailed after fighting off an angry bear with an axe in order to protect his flock of sheep.
Blazo Grkovic, 48, almost decapitated the wild beast after it attacked him and his flock of animals in the south-eastern village of Vrba in Bosnia, and despite receiving life-threatening injuries, managed to fight off the brown grizzly.
He is quoted in a BBC News video as saying: "I was off to move a baby goat, but a bear appeared from the forest and caught my leg.
"I hit it over the neck with my axe, and it fell down.
"I lay on it, and was hitting it while it bit me several times on the arm.
"They told me that I almost decapitated it."
Blazo suffered from soft tissue damage to his left forearm and slashes to his face and bone fracture but doctors have confirmed that he is expected to make a full recovery.
