Date creeps closer for switch-off of analogue signal

The lack of enthusiasm for digital TV and the emergence of a hard-core group dubbed ‘‘refuseniks’’ is threatening the Government’s preferred switch-off date for analogue of 2006.

The lack of enthusiasm for digital TV and the emergence of a hard-core group dubbed ‘‘refuseniks’’ is threatening the Government’s preferred switch-off date for analogue of 2006.

Ministers have always maintained they will never switch off the analogue signal until 95% of viewers have been converted, and it is looking increasingly likely that the date will be nearer 2010.

A spokesman for Dixons, which is taking orders for the new adapter from today, said demand from customers had been quite high.

He said a store in Oxford Street in central London had taken an order within minutes of opening and a number more in within the first hour.

The retailer will begin stocking the product at the end of next week.
