Bush asks Senate to ban all human cloning

US President George W Bush has asked the US Senate to pass legislation banning all forms of human cloning, including the cloning of embryos for research and the treatment of diseases.

US President George W Bush has asked the US Senate to pass legislation banning all forms of human cloning, including the cloning of embryos for research and the treatment of diseases.

In a speech to doctors, scientists, politicians, religious activists and the disabled, Mr Bush said: "Life is a creation, not a commodity.

"Advances in new biotechnology must never come at the expense of human conscience. As we seek what is possible, we must always ask what is right and we must not forget that even the most noble ends do not justify any means."

In July, the US House of Representatives passed a ban on all human cloning, but many Senators support using the process to create embryonic stem cells which could potentially lead to a cure for many diseases.
