Gardaí crackdown on bogus asylum seekers

Seventeen non-nationals are being detained by gardaí in various locations around the country as part of an investigation into bogus asylum seekers.

Seventeen non-nationals are being detained by gardaí in various locations around the country as part of an investigation into bogus asylum seekers.

Detectives from the Garda National Bureau of Immigration detained the asylum seekers, believed to be from West Africa and Eastern Europe, yesterday in Cork, Ennis, Galway and Dublin.

They are currently awaiting deportation.

Further arrests are expected.
