A US university shut down its campus today and ordered everyone to remain inside as authorities searched for an escaped prison inmate suspected of killing a hospital guard and shooting a campus police officer, who later died.

William Morva (aged 24), had been reported seen on the campus of Virginia Tech, authorities said.

The first day of classes was cancelled for more than 25,000 students as a precaution. The extent of the campus officer’s injuries were not immediately known.

“We did close the campus and asked people to stay in dorms and academic areas,” campus Police Lt. Vincent Houston said.
