Comedian Paul O'Grady, better known as Lily Savage, says he is reviewing his lifestyle.
The 46-year-old comic is recovering at his London home after leaving hospital this week following a heart scare last Friday.
And the star of TV's Blankety Blank thanked fans for their kind messages and cards during his illness.
Through his manager, O'Grady said: "I have been overwhelmed by people's generosity, by their cards and letters and flowers.
"I admit I was a little shocked by the level of messages. One of my first visitors in hospital was the man who sweeps the road in Tower Bridge who I speak to when walking the dog."
And the star revealed he is reviewing many things since the heart attack.
"I have given up smoking for the first time in my adult life. I have never stopped smoking, ever, but this has been life-changing experience for me."
He was admitted during the early hours of the previous Friday after suffering chest pains. Doctors diagnosed a heart attack and underwent a procedure to widen a blocked artery.
His manager said O'Grady was now concentrating on recovering and it was too early to say when he would return to work.
