Ireland’s most capped player, Steve Staunton, and the all-time top goal scorer, Niall Quinn, have announced their decisions to retire from international football in the wake of today’s defeat to Spain in a penalty shoot-out.

Staunton passed the 100-cap mark while playing in this World Cup and was one of our star performers throughout the tournament. He took over the captain’s armband after Roy Keane left the team and produced some excellent performances in the group stages.

He was substituted shortly after half time after he failed to shake off a knee injury that he picked up shortly before the break.

Quinn had already announced his decision to hang up his boots after this tournament but after his excellent display after he came on as a substitute in the second half.
