Approximately 19,000 people received the Mortgage Interest Supplement last year, costing the Government €68m.

The supplement is given to households to help them with their mortgage repayments over a short-term period.

Dr Orlaigh Quinn from the Department of Social Protection revealed the figures at an Oireachtas Committee meeting this afternoon.
