Sean Haughey to stay with Fianna Fáil, say supporters

Sean Haughey's supporters say he is not going to leave the Fianna Fáil party if he is not given a ministerial position.

Sean Haughey's supporters say he is not going to leave the Fianna Fáil party if he is not given a ministerial position.

Reports this morning suggested that the Dublin North-Central TD would stand as an Independent at the next election if Bertie Ahern did not offer him a Junior Ministerial job, but sources close to Haughey are denying this.

Councillor Tom Stafford supported Deputy Haughey at the last election. He is adamant that the speculation is groundless.

“There’s no way Sean Haughey would attempt to run as an Independent,” he said. “The Haughey and the Lemass families are the backbone of Fianna Fáil”, he added.

He said he believes Deputy Haughey will be satisfied “in the interim” with whatever came from the meeting he had with the Taoiseach last week.
