The National Disease Surveillance Centre has urged parents to utilise the controversial MMR vaccine in an effort to offset a measles outbreak.

258 cases of the infection have been reported to the centre so far this year, 80% of them in the eastern and midlands regions.

Just 30 cases of measles were reported in the same period last year.

Medical professionals have reported a significant fall in use of the MMR vaccine since studies raised fears that the three-in-one vaccine could be linked to autism.
