Waterford city centre has ground to a halt this afternoon as taxi drivers take to the streets in protest over the lack of taxi ranks in the city.

Over 100 drivers are taking part in the demonstration, which centres around the decision to pedestrianise the main rank in the city two years ago, just as deregulation saw a huge jump in taxi numbers.

Dave O'Reilly of the Waterford Taxi Federation said deregulation had already downgraded taxi values, and this latest development was unacceptable.
