The death toll in a school collapse on the impoverished island of Haiti now stands at least 75.
The mayor of the suburb of Petionville, near the capital Port-au-Prince, said the confirmed death toll increased sharply after crews uncovered a classroom filled with students and a teacher.
Claire Lydie Parent said that at least 17 students were found crushed today as crews continue to search for victims.
Authorities said there may have been hundreds of students in La Promesse school when the concrete building collapsed on Friday.
Haiti President Rene Preval said there are buildings throughout Haiti that are at risk of similar collapse because of shoddy construction and lax oversight.
