An Irish comedy; and a satisfyingly funny one, too.
With such a sterling cast to work with, McPherson brings us a cleverly constructed tale of two no-hope actors - Caine and Moran - who set out, Sting-like, to pull a con on a hood (Gambon) who has been a bit of a menace.
Cue lots of silly characters in silly costumes providing silly laughs. It's not the greatest film you're ever going to see but it's great fun and it does deliver on its promise.
Caine is, as always, Caine and Moran, in his first major film, contributes greatly to the overall enjoyment. It runs on a plot that hardly matters - such films always require a plot of complex twists and turns - since everything else about it holds our attention.
It is not, thankfully, about unwashed Dublin druggies and is all the more welcome for that. It's the sort of light-hearted fluff that will leave you with a solid feel-good factor; a spanking good effort all round!
