The 2001 Scottish Open began at Loch Lomond today, with Ireland’s Darren Clarke one of the favourites to win the tournament after his convincing victory in last week’s Smurfit European Open at the K Club.

There are plenty of top-class players in the field, although the competition will be missing last year’s winner, Ernie Els who is recovering from a back injury.

Colin Montgomerie is another favourite to win the title that also gives valuable Ryder Cup points to the top finishers.
