Parents are being advised to look out for symptoms of meningitis after two children were diagnosed with it in Co Cavan.

The two children, who attend a créche in Kilnaleck, are confirmed with meningitis.

The HSE is advising parents and carers to contact a doctor immediately if they suspect they or their child has .

Dr Peter Finnegan, HSE Public Health Specialist in Cavan and Monaghan told Northern Sound that health authorities are taking precautions to prevent the spread of meningitis.

"It's a routine thing that any close contacts with a child, and particularly family contacts and household contacts, are given an antibiotic to prevent the spread of this infection," Dr Finnegan said.

"We've visited the creche and given all the close contacts the antibiotic, and all the family members."
