A strong earthquake has hit the impoverished country of Haiti, where a hospital collapsed.

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3.

It occurred this afternoon and was centred about 14 miles west of the Caribbean nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince.

The collapsed hospital was in Petionville.
