At least 10 soldiers and four Tamil Tiger rebels were killed today in fresh fighting in eastern Sri Lanka, a pro-rebel website said.

A report on the pro-rebel TamilNet website said a group of soldiers entered the rebel-held region in Batticaloa district, 140 miles east of Colombo.

Military spokesman Brig Prasad Samarasinghe denied this and said Tamil tigers attacked a group of soldiers who were patrolling in the area.”

He did not give exact number of soldiers killed in the fighting but said some were missing.

Four rebels were killed and six wounded, the website said.
