The Irish branch of Amnesty International has called on the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern to make sure the issue of human rights is to the fore during this week's trade mission to China.

Mr Ahern is leading the mission, which includes four other cabinet ministers and representatives from more than 200 Irish companies.

The trip is designed to secure business links and lucrative contracts for Irish firms.

Amnesty Ireland said today that China had an appalling human rights record and this could not be ignored by the Taoiseach during his visit.
