Club Tahiti tames Newbury rivals

Clowance's half-sister Club Tahiti was the one to stand out on a quiet but nonetheless informative afternoon of maiden races at Newbury.

Clowance's half-sister Club Tahiti was the one to stand out on a quiet but nonetheless informative afternoon of maiden races at Newbury.

Representing the same connections as this year's Oaks fourth in trainer Roger Charlton and Seasons Holidays boss Barry Hurley, the juvenile was unfancied on her debut at 16-1 but appears a sharper type than her sibling.

She was not hard pushed to quicken four lengths away from Sakhee's Pearl in division one of the Vodafone EBF Maiden Stakes, earning a 33-1 quote for next year's 1000 Guineas from VCBet.

"I'm really, really pleased," said Charlton. "Being by Hernando she should be all stamina but physically she looks built for six and seven furlongs. That's the main surprise about her.

"It's very encouraging and we might come back here for the Radley Stakes now."

Gay Kelleway also likes Sakhee's Pearl, who had not done much work prior to her racecourse bow.

Charlton later added the Vodafone Fillies' Handicap through Belotto (12-1), who must go left-handed.

Film Set (11-4) took division two, owed in part to a typically clever Frankie Dettori ride from the front.

With a couple of furlongs to run it seemed only a question of how far the Godolphin colt - a good second on his debut at Pontefract - would win by as he ambled along and while Noverre To Go managed to provide a serious challenge along the stands rail, Dettori had plenty more up his sleeve.

There were two divisions over a mile for the harino.com - Virtual Racing, Real Excitement Maiden Stakes and some interesting Derby-type performers in the first leg.

This went to 5-6 shot Palavicini, who has started to live up to his sizeable home reputation.

John Dunlop's colt was also the odds-on favourite in the Haynes, Hanson & Clark Stakes at the track last month, finishing third to the potentially exciting Taameer that day.

Eddie Ahern found himself coming under pressure approaching the distance but managed to coax more out of Palavicini to finish a length clear of Lasso The Moon.

"He feels like a very good horse - you've not seen him out of third gear today," said Ahern.

"He jumped off a bit quick and I found myself in front at the four pole.

"I'd have loved to have got a lead to the two pole, so he could show his turn of foot. I know they have always loved him at the yard."

Tadhg O'Shea reckoned Lasso The Moon, a well-bred newcomer from the Mick Channon yard, could reverse the form with another run.

Division two was closer with Skanky Biscuit (5-1), who refused to go in the stalls at the track's previous meeting, learning at least from his racecourse visit to stick his head in front of Bothy.

"He was more than man enough for the job when I gave him a smack. He's got an engine," said jockey Richard Hughes.

Hughes doubled up in the Vodafone Handicap aboard potentially useful stayer Kokkokila (6-1).

Kingswinford (8-1) is a far more experienced juvenile and earned further appreciation from trainer David Evans as he fought off the confidently-ridden Timeteam in the Sir Gerald Whent Nursery.

It was Kingswingford's 14th racecourse start and Evans said: "He gave me my first ever winner at Newbury after 20 years training, and now he's given me a second."
