Government ministers are reportedly due to discuss a major package of anti-crime measures at their weekly cabinet meeting today.

Reports this morning said legislation due to be presented by Minister for Justice Michael McDowell would include provisions for the electronic tagging of some offenders and the introduction of anti-social behaviour orders.

Other elements include a gun amnesty for old firearms that have not be used in crimes, the outlawing of sawn-off shotguns and mandatory minimum sentences for certain gun-related offences.

The proposed legislation would also make it an offence to be a member of a criminal gang.
