Teenage boy drowns while swimming in River Lee

A teenage boy has died after getting into difficulties while swimming in the River Lee in Cork city yesterday evening.

A teenage boy has died after getting into difficulties while swimming in the River Lee in Cork city yesterday evening.

A search operation was mounted after the boy went under while swimming with friends near Fitzgerald's Park just after 8pm.

Navy divers and a coastguard helicopter were involved in the operation.

Just after midnight, the boy's body was recovered from the water not far from where the he had disappeared.

The teenager's name hasn't been released, but he was from the Fairhill area in the north of the city.
