Southwell beaten by snow

Officials at Southwell have been forced to abandon this afternoon’s National Hunt meeting due to snow on the track.

Officials at Southwell have been forced to abandon this afternoon’s National Hunt meeting due to snow on the track.

The Nottinghamshire venue has been hit by a substantial amount of snow over the past 24 hours and with temperatures still hovering around freezing, acting clerk of the course Fergus Cameron has been left with little option but to call off proceedings.

“We had called an inspection for 7.30am but were able to bring it forward as we have almost an inch of snow on the track,” said Cameron.

“It’s still around freezing now and things are not going to improve sufficiently before racing. We could also get some more snow later in the day so we have had to abandon the meeting.”

The news means 13-times champion jockey Tony McCoy will have to wait at least another day to secure the 3,000th National Hunt winner of his career.

McCoy is currently on the 2,998 winner mark and had three rides booked at this afternoon’s meeting.
