A Colombian environmentalist has told the AGM of the Smurfit Corporation that the company is lying about its tree-planting programme in the US.

Nestor Campo, who travelled specially for the meeting, said Smurfit is also not applying proper health standards in its treatment of staff in South America.

He was backed in his claim by Patricia McKenna of the Green Party, who said that Smurfit is using sub-contractors to employ staff in Colombia.

If the staff are in trouble with the law or raise issues about health and safety, the corporation "doesn't want to know", she said.
