Nurses are expected to voice their anger and frustration today over pay levels as their annual conference gets underway.

Delegates at the Irish Nurses Organisation’s annual conference will be debating whether to call a national pay rally to express their disgust at the injustices of their relative pay.

The emergency motion, headed ’21-years is a mighty long time’, which will be put to delegates states there can be no justification for nurses and midwives being the second lowest paid among the frontline care staff.

Other key issues including privatisation and staff levels will also dominate the agenda at the conference in the Slieve Russell Hotel in Ballyconnell, Co Cavan.

The conference will debate a total of 70 motions covering a range of issues from student nurses, specialist nurses and others working in hospital and the community and management.

Professor Allyson Pollock, from the University of Edinburgh, will address the conference on the effect of privatisation on the public health service, while the chief executive officer of the International Council of Nurses, Judith Oulten, is speak on the impact staffing levels has on the standard of care.
