Gardaí set for 24-hour intensive crackdown on speed

Gardaí are hoping a 24-hour intensive crackdown on speed this weekend will save lives on the roads.

Last year, six people died over the June Bank Holiday weekend.

In July gardaí instituted Operation Slowdown and noticed a 50% reduction in speeding.

The slowdown got underway this morning at 7am, and continues until 7am tomorrow morning.

Garda Derek Cloughley from the Garda Traffic Corps said that half of drivers think it is unacceptable to speed, but they are targeting the remaining 50%.

"One thing to remember for all motorists and all drivers, the speed limits are not targets we don't have to achieve that number," he said.

"We want people to drive at a safe speed, the message then slow down to save lives."
