Eircom League defends fixtures decision

The eircom League has defended its decision not to reschedule fixtures involving Bohemians and St Patrick's Athletic.

The eircom League has defended its decision not to reschedule fixtures involving Bohemians and St Patrick's Athletic.

The two Dublin clubs played an FAI Cup semi-final replay last night and both wanted tomorrow night's eircom League games postponed saying there was not enough time between the games.

However, the eircom League has refued this request saying the eircom League season would have to be extended if they did so.

The eircom League said today: "Every possibility was explored to find alternative dates for these fixtures without having to extend the season. Solutions suggested to the eircom League involved substantial re-arranging of other fixtures.

"Under the rules that protect the agreed fixture list, the General Manager of the eircom League does not have the power to either unilaterally extend the playing season or to insist that fixtures be re-arranged without the consent of all clubs concerned."
