Police shoot dead man wielding a knife

Police have shot dead a man who was threatening a woman with a knife at a house in London.

A number of shots were fired during the incident at Shepperton Road in Islington at around 1am and the 40-year-old died 20 minutes later while on route to the hospital, Scotland Yard said.

Police had sent a negotiator to the scene at 11.19pm yesterday following reports the man had broken into a house.

The man and woman involved are believed to have known each other, police said.

The woman was not harmed but is being treated for shock.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: “As in any shooting, officers from the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) have been informed and this incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).”

Police have cordoned off Shepperton Road with blue and white tape and several uniformed officers are standing guard along the street.

The leafy street, near Islington’s fashionable Upper Street, is lined with pretty Georgian houses.

Rosa Whiteread, 28, a primary school teacher who lives in the street, said: ``I was asleep and I heard shouting - it woke me up. It must have been around 12.30 at night.

“I looked out of the window and I saw lots of police, there must have been around a dozen of them. I asked them what was going on, but they said they couldn’t tell me.

“I’m not sure if the police were armed, but I saw a police dog. It’s shocking.”
