A grandfather is suspected of kidnapping his baby grandson and demanding a £40,000 ransom to feed a slot machine gambling habit.

Police in Madrid said they arrested the 53-year-old Chinese man and a Chinese woman accused of being his accomplice.

They said that at one point the man called the parents of the 14-month-old boy saying he too had been kidnapped but escaped, and urging them to pay up because the abductors were violent.

Police say a special police kidnapping team began to suspect the grandfather because his story did not hold up and he did not co-operate with authorities.
