Kid wants to be Batman for a day. San Francisco grants his wish.

A little boy who has been battling cancer gets the chance to be a superhero for a day - and the entire city is in on it.

Kid wants to be Batman for a day. San Francisco grants his wish.

Every now and then there's a story that restores your faith in humanity.

This is one of those.

Little Miles Scott, a five-year old from northern California, has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia since he was 20 months old.

This is Miles. He likes Batman.

Currently in remission, with his last bout of chemotherapy having wound up in June, Miles is a huge fan of the caped crusader.

So much so, that his one biggest wish was to be Batman for a day.

Enter the Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation, who decided that Miles' dream should come true.

And enter the people of that great city of San Francisco, who have pulled together today to make #SFBatkid the star of the show.

First up, Batkid left the city's Union Square in one of two Batmobiles this morning. The vehicles — two black Lamborghinis with Batman decals — were surrounded by media and onlookers.

The Lamborghinis were escorted by police, who also blocked off roads. Lots of people came out to support #SFBatkid as news of his adventures began trending.

Batkid fever took over the city - as even news helicopters followed his travels from above.

Some people went all out.

Batkid's first caper was rescuing a damsel in distress from cable car tracks.

It looks like the work of The Riddler.

Batkid soon swings into action, and even US President Barack Obama is in on the jape.

Like a true superhero, he gets the job done.

But it was all a distraction! The Riddler is robbing downtown bank.

Not with Batkid on the job, he isn't.

That nefarious villian did not look pleased.

But the huge crowds were delighted.

And it didn't end there - Batkid had a packed schedule of superhero duties before he was set to receive a key to the city from Mayor Ed Lee.

Even the local press was up for it, as the cover of today's San Francisco Chronicle demonstrates.

Sometimes people are just brilliant.
