Clontarf 26 Cork Con 29
Cork Con came from behind for an incredible seventh time this season to snatch their ninth win from the jaws of defeat against Clontarf, with a late try by centre Jean-Vincent Igarza in a 29-26 win.
League leaders Con may have gifted six bonus points to the opposition in their last six games, but they remain the only unbeaten side across the three AIL Divisions.
A bonus point win looked on the cards for the visitors to Castle Avenue, as Con racked up a 17-5 half-time lead.
Tries from former skipper Ultan O’Callaghan, his third of the season, and centre Cian Mahony were added to by scrum half Pat McCarthy, whose penalty and brace of conversions saw him clock up 100 points for the season.
But the Dublin side, who lost their 14-game unbeaten home record to Ballymena three weeks ago, hit back early in the second in a 10-minute spell which saw Con give up three tries.
Full-back Daragh O’Shea had sprinted clear for ‘Tarf’s only score of the first half, but following a third try for Con from left wing Thomas O’Leary, the home side scorched over for two tries from 22-year-old left wing Niall O’Brien, and a second of the season for Ben Wakeley on the hour mark.
That made the score 26-22 in Clontarf’s favour, with Dave McAllister converting three of Clontarf’s tries.
It looked on the cards that a famous win for Clontarf but up popped Igarza in the eighth minute of injury time to spoil their day with his third try of the season, converted by McCarthy.
