The Irish Exporters Association has said Irish exporters are being hindered by lack of a universal post code system in the country.
The association said exporters rely on rapid parcel import services more heavily than most of their foreign competitors, to complete processing in Ireland, add value and then re-export.
According to the group, Ireland is the only EU or OECD country without a post code system and the current postal system is believed to be adding 20% to 30% to the sorting/routing costs in An Post.
They said business would benefit from a post code system since more efficient sorting would help An Post reach the Com Reg target for next day delivery of 94%. Current levels are running at around 75%.
The level of returned mail would fall from around 6% to 2%.
As a result, businesses would be more able to do target marketing.
