A joint venture, Cometa Networks has been formed between Intel, IBM, AT& T and two venture firms for the provision of high speed wireless internet access.

Cometa Networks aims to increase the number of "hot spots" for accessing wireless internet networks by installing network devices in chain retail stores, restaurants, hotels and petrol stations.

Intel said that the venture was part of a drive to invest $150m (€150m) in "WiFi" technology to help raise demand for wireless equipment.

WiFi uses radio waves to extend the internet and company network through the air for around 300 feet. IBM is to provide back office services and AT&T's high-speed network is to carry Cometa's wireless internet traffic.

The venture is to be financed by venture capital firms Apax Partners and 3iGroup and by Intel Capital.
