Opposition join fight against student fee rise

Opposition parties have joined forces with the Union of Students in Ireland today in demanding the reversal of the 68% increase in third level registration fees from €394 to €670.

Opposition parties have joined forces with the Union of Students in Ireland today in demanding the reversal of the 68% increase in third level registration fees from €394 to €670.

USI President, Colm Jordan, said that there is no justification for this rise and students would need to be earning €10 an hour to afford the increase.

It's unfair and unrealistic to expect parents to foot the bill, he said.

Fine Gael's Education spokeswoman Olwyn Enright urged the Minister for Education to meet with student representatives to discuss both the registration fee increase and the grants issue in general, without delay.

Labour's education spokesman, Joe Costello, said that Labour will be tabling a Dáil motion to try to have the decision reversed.
