Accessibility worries for European Food and Veterinary Office

A delegation of MEP's is expressing concern for the future of the European Food and Veterinary office at Grange in Co Meath.

The temporary base for the office is in Clonskeagh in Dublin, which has already seen a high turnover of staff.

Fears are being expressed that the Grange site is too remote.

90 staff attached to the Food and Veterinary Office have the option of returning to Brussels after two years.

Many inspectors have already said they will take up the offer, before the move to Grange.

Fine Gael MEP Avril Doyle said accessibility to the Co Meath site is a serious problem, with a motorway and a rail link still a few years away.

While Green MEP Patricia McKenna said the water supply to the Grange centre is not fit for human consumption.

Meanwhile, the delegation from the European Parliament’s Environment Committee is also expressing fears regarding EU enlargement.

The committee members said while new countries may be ready to enter the union politically, their agricultural methods are still years behind, which could endanger farming across the EU.
