Driver error was responsible for 80% of all fatal road accidents last year, according to the National Roads Authority.

A report by the NRA found that of the 411 people who died in road accidents in 2001, 202 died in crashes on straight roads and 103 on roads with bends.

Around one-third of all fatal accidents involved just one vehicle, while head-on collisions accounted for 27% of the deaths.

The NRA said driving on the wrong side of the road while overtaking or falling asleep at the wheel were the reasons for most two-vehicle collisions.
