Jose Maria Olazabal led Colin Montgomerie by one halfway through the duel of the captains in the Seve Trophy at The Wynyard near Middlesbrough today.
It was their first match play clash since Olazabal won the final of the 1984 British amateur championship and this time, with his Continental Europe side trailing Britain and Ireland by one overnight, he went two-up after six.
Montgomerie sank a six-foot birdie putt on the next, but missed from similar range at the eighth and also failed to take a 12-foot opportunity to level on the following green.
Paul Casey and David Howell continued their good weeks to be in front early on, but the Continentals led in four more of the singles and were level in two more.
It looked set to be a tense climax to the event, which Britain and Ireland won 15-13 in Valencia two years ago.
