Consumers have been urged to return bottles of Australian wine bought from Lidl stores by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.
Customers who bought bottles of the Australian Creston Bay brand Cabernet Shiraz have been told that the wine is being recalled as a precautionary measure.
Tests carried out in Germany have indicated almost 17 times higher than permitted levels of sulphur dioxide have been detected in some affected batches.
The FSAI states that this level of sulphur dioxide could trigger asthma attacks and consumers should return bottles to Lidl stores where purchased.
FSAI Chief Specialist Environmental Health, Jeffrey Moon said :"Consumers who have bought one of these bottles and opened the wine will probably have noticed a strong smell and have realised that the wine is not suitable to drink.
"However, those with asthma are warned not to open or drink the wine as an asthma attack may be triggered from inhaling the strong smell of the chemical alone," Moon added.
The wine, bottled in 2002, has now been withdrawn from sale.
The bottle features a picture of a kangaroo and a gum tree on the label and was only stocked in Lidl stores.
