Up to 12 more men may seek release after court ruling

Up to 12 more men convicted of statutory rape could reportedly seek immediate release from prison in light of last week's Supreme Court ruling.

Up to 12 more men convicted of statutory rape could reportedly seek immediate release from prison in light of last week's Supreme Court ruling.

Yesterday, the High Court ordered the release of a 41-year-old man convicted of having unlawful carnal knowledge of a 12-year-old girl.

The man challenged his detention following the Supreme Court's judgement that Ireland's statutory rape law is unconstitutional.

Reports this morning said 12 more men who are serving prison sentences for the offence could now seek release.

The Director of Public Prosecutions will also reportedly have to amend his case against up to 20 more men and charge them with sexual assault and harassment rather than statutory rape.

The Government, meanwhile, has cancelled next week's Dáil recess so it can bring in new legislation on Wednesday to rectify the situation.
