Twenty people have been killed after a passenger bus collided head-on with a lorry on Peru's Pan American highway.

Twenty people have been killed after a passenger bus collided head-on with a lorry on Peru's Pan American highway.

More than 40 others have been injured in the crash.

The dead include a four-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, police say, adding that bodies are still being recovered from the twisted wreckage.

The accident occurred in the central province of Casma, 205 miles northwest of the capital, Lima. The bus was travelling to the northern coastal city of Trujillo.

The cause of the crash is not clear and is under investigation, police said.

The injured passengers have been taken to several area hospitals and clinics for treatment.
