Police raided a criminal hideout and freed a British citizen taken hostage, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry said today.

Police raided a criminal hideout and freed a British citizen taken hostage, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry said today.

During the raid late yesterday near Sofia, one of the abductors was killed, and two were arrested, the ministry said in a statement.

The kidnappers had demanded €65,000 to release the Briton, Christo Thanos, police said.

Police officials refused to comment further, but said more details on the operation were to be disclosed later today.
